About
With a foundation in Canadian roots rock and a penchant for crafting noisy guitar jams, Cuff the Duke's unique blend of genres
has consistently escaped the confines of simple classification, earning them an honoured place under the umbrella of
"alternative."
Six albums, a pair of JUNO nods, countless miles clocked on the road, including sharing stages with iconic acts like Blue Rodeo,
Hayden Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds and Calexico. Then, poof! A ten-year vanishing act, playing only a handful of shows in that
time. But like all great tales, ours has a twist: Cuff the Duke has reemerged from the shadows, with the promise of a new album
titled “Breaking Dawn”, released September 6th, 2024.
Poised to once again cross musical borders as effortlessly as a game of hopscotch, their comeback is more than a mere addition
to their discography—it's a homecoming celebration of their enduring legacy and the love of getting together with old friends
and playing music.
On the new album, frontman Wayne Petti states: If you're someone who battles depression or anxiety in their day-to-day life,
you can often suffer in silence. For most of my life, whether I knew it or not, anxiety and depression was something I navigated
on my own, with no road map. At times, it was overwhelming and affected my life, and at times, it was like a low-grade backache
that lingered, but I could suppress it enough not to drag me down too far. I always knew it was there, lingering an old sports
injury.
With that said, all the songs on this record deal with me coming to terms with my own mental health and reflect the various
stages of that journey. There are musical interludes throughout the album. I initially thought those would represent a certain
calmness. Still, I think they actually represent my anxiety that is always something I have to deal with. The songs are one of my
ways of processing those feelings, ultimately representing a certain calmness and relief.
